How to prepare for high-altitude mountain biking

Acclimatisation, hydration and training tips to get the most out of your trip to the Andes.

Riding at 4,000 m is not the same as riding at sea level. Here's what we tell riders flying in from far away.

Acclimatisation

Get to Quito (2,850 m) at least 48 hours before the first tour. Your body needs the time.

Hydration

At least 3 L of water a day. Dry mountain air will fool you.

Training

Long rides and lower-body strength work in the four weeks before the trip.
