Expeditions

Central Icons

Central Icons is a focused Gravity Lines expedition through Ecuador's central Andes, connecting Quito, Cotopaxi, Mamarumi and Chimborazo in a compact but serious riding format. The trip is built around a progressive sequence: Quito and Casitagua introduce riders to altitude, terrain and local rhythm; Cotopaxi adds volcanic scale and riding variety; Mamarumi brings history, length and ecosystem transition; Hieleros closes the journey with one of the strongest high-altitude riding experiences in the Ecuadorian Andes. Designed for riders who want a shorter expedition without losing the core Gravity Lines experience, Central Icons combines serious terrain, cultural context, mountain logistics and direct exposure to Ecuador's central volcanic landscape.

Expedition flow

Central Icons

  1. 01

    Quito & first Andean ride

The expedition begins in Quito with flexible airport transfers, rider arrivals and a welcome briefing focused on trip flow, safety, equipment, riding expectations and weather. The first riding day starts with a focused introduction to Quito's historic center before the Casitagua ride above the city — a fun, fluid descent through loose dirt, dry-forest terrain and changing grip that gives riders a first contact with Andean conditions without excessive physical load. The group then stops near Mitad del Mundo before continuing south toward the Cotopaxi region.

  2. 02

    Cotopaxi & volcanic riding

The Cotopaxi stage adds altitude, volcanic scale and riding variety. The day combines a controlled session at CotoBike Park, when operating, with an authorized descent inside Cotopaxi National Park — typically the Holy Ridge / Arenales line or a similar route depending on access, weather and current park conditions. This places riders inside one of Ecuador's most iconic volcanic landscapes: open high-Andean terrain, loose surfaces, wind, altitude and the scale of Cotopaxi itself. If the park is not operating, this session may be replaced by a natural mountain ride on the southbound route toward Chimborazo, such as Pilisurco.

  3. 03

    Mamarumi & historic Andean descent

Mamarumi is one of Ecuador's most meaningful historic mountain routes — a legendary Andean descent shaped by geography, local movement and the transition between highland and lower subtropical terrain. The route moves from the high Andes into warmer, greener environments, crossing changing landscapes, rural corridors, cultivated areas, bamboo sections and lower mountain communities. For riders, Mamarumi delivers a long, physical and highly memorable descent that connects different elevations, climates and cultural landscapes in a single continuous experience.

  4. 04

    Chimborazo & Hieleros

The final riding stage takes place in the Chimborazo region, one of the highest and most powerful landscapes of the Ecuadorian Andes. Hieleros begins in the high-altitude environment surrounding Chimborazo and descends through raw Andean terrain, páramo and volcanic highlands toward lower elevations — the most serious high-mountain stage of Central Icons, defined by altitude, weather, open landscapes, remote terrain and the scale of Chimborazo. The trip builds toward this day progressively, with Quito, Casitagua, Cotopaxi and Mamarumi creating rhythm, adaptation and context before the final high-altitude descent.

Itinerary overview

Central Icons

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Quito

Arrival in Quito, flexible airport transfers, hotel check-in, bike build, equipment preparation and welcome briefing. The expedition begins with time to rest, adapt to altitude and align on safety, logistics and the riding journey ahead.

  2. Day 2

Quito / Casitagua / Mitad del Mundo / transfer to Cotopaxi

A focused introduction to Quito's historic center gives riders a first sense of the capital before the opening ride above the city. Casitagua starts the riding program with loose dirt, dry-forest terrain, fluid descending and changing grip. After the ride, the group stops for lunch near Mitad del Mundo before transferring south toward the Cotopaxi region. Dinner is included at the Cotopaxi-region accommodation.

  3. Day 3

CotoBike Park / Cotopaxi National Park / transfer to Chimborazo Lodge

The day begins in the Cotopaxi region with a morning session at CotoBike Park, when operating (access included). Lunch at or near CotoBike Park is not included. In the afternoon, the group moves into Cotopaxi National Park for an authorized descent, typically the Holy Ridge / Arenales line or a similar route depending on access, weather and park conditions. If CotoBike Park is not operating, the morning may be replaced by a natural mountain ride such as Pilisurco. The group then continues south toward Chimborazo Lodge, where dinner is included.

  4. Day 4

    Mamarumi / historic Andean descent

An early departure toward Mamarumi. This historic Andean descent moves through changing terrain, climates and cultural landscapes, connecting highland environments with warmer lower zones through one of Ecuador's most memorable mountain routes. A picnic lunch is included. After the ride, the group returns to Chimborazo Lodge for recovery, dinner and rest before the final high-altitude riding stage.

  5. Day 5

    Hieleros / Chimborazo high-altitude descent

The final riding day takes place in the Chimborazo region. Hieleros begins in the high-altitude environment surrounding Chimborazo and descends through raw Andean terrain, páramo and volcanic highlands — the strongest high-mountain stage of Central Icons and the natural closing point of the riding progression. A picnic lunch is included. After the ride, the group returns to Chimborazo Lodge for recovery, bike packing and a farewell dinner in the high Andes.

  6. Day 6

    Transfer out

The final day is dedicated to transfer logistics after the riding portion. Depending on flight schedules, the group departs Chimborazo Lodge and begins the return toward Quito, UIO Airport or onward travel. Breakfast is included when lodge timing and departure schedules allow.

Logistics & accommodations

Central Icons is designed around a compact but progressive accommodation structure. The trip begins in Quito, moves south into the Cotopaxi region and then continues to Chimborazo Lodge for the final mountain stages — reducing unnecessary hotel changes while allowing the route to move naturally through Ecuador's central volcanic corridor. Accommodations are selected for their role in the experience: arrival comfort in Quito, access to the Cotopaxi region and recovery in the high-Andean environment of Chimborazo. The expedition price is based on shared occupancy accommodation — riders are generally placed in shared twin rooms, depending on hotel configuration and group composition. Single-room accommodation may be arranged upon request, subject to availability and an additional single supplement. Vehicle support, equipment handling, daily transitions and route logistics are managed to keep the group moving efficiently through the central Andes.

Built for riders who want Ecuador's central icons in a compact but serious format — volcanic terrain, historic descents, high-altitude riding and the raw scale of the Andes.

Rider & expedition information

Riding style & difficulty

Designed for experienced intermediate to advanced enduro riders. The trip includes natural terrain, loose surfaces, changing grip, high-altitude riding, long descents, historic routes and remote mountain environments. The itinerary is compact, but the riding is serious — Mamarumi and Hieleros require attention, confidence, line choice, solid bike control and focus through long descents. The progression is intentional: riders build rhythm through Quito, Casitagua and Cotopaxi before Mamarumi and Hieleros.

Fitness requirement

Moderate to high. Riders should be comfortable with repeated riding days, long descents, altitude exposure, sustained time on the bike and sections that may include pedaling or pushing. Hieleros is the most serious high-altitude stage, while Mamarumi delivers a long, physical historic descent with constant terrain change. Central Icons is shorter than Highline Traverse, but its compact format still includes demanding mountain days.

Elevation

Central Icons moves through a wide elevation range, from Quito's mountain setting to the volcanic terrain of Cotopaxi and the high-altitude environment surrounding Chimborazo. The riding progression helps riders adapt gradually before reaching the highest and most demanding terrain. Altitude, weather, temperature and terrain change significantly across the itinerary.

Weather & conditions

Conditions can change quickly across regions, elevations and sides of the Andes. The trip includes dry-forest terrain, volcanic highlands, páramo, lower subtropical transitions and high-altitude riding. Route selection and daily flow may adapt to access, terrain quality, weather, park conditions and group energy.

Food & recovery

No meals are included on arrival day. Breakfast is included throughout according to hotel or lodge schedules. On Day 2, lunch near Mitad del Mundo is not included; dinner is included at the Cotopaxi-region accommodation. On Day 3, lunch at or near CotoBike Park is not included; dinner is included at Chimborazo Lodge. Picnic lunches are included during Mamarumi and Hieleros, with dinner at Chimborazo Lodge after Mamarumi and a farewell dinner after Hieleros. Breakfast on the transfer-out day is included when timing allows. Alcoholic beverages, extra drinks, snacks and meals outside the planned food support are not included unless stated.

Safety & support

A controlled group structure with guide-led navigation, terrain management and pace coordination on every stage. Hydration planning, pacing, route management, park-access coordination and vehicle support are integrated throughout. High-altitude days are approached with specific attention to weather, timing, group condition and route access.

Mechanical support

Basic field repairs and mechanical assistance are available throughout. Riders are still expected to arrive with properly maintained equipment.

Medical & emergency

Emergency response and evacuation logistics are planned per riding zone and regional access. Response times may vary with terrain, access, altitude and location.

Insurance

Personal travel and medical insurance with mountain biking coverage is required. Gravity Lines also includes local operational insurance as part of the expedition; riders are responsible for ensuring their personal policy covers adventure sports, medical treatment and international travel.

Bike rentals

Performance-oriented enduro and downhill rentals can be arranged for riders traveling without equipment, subject to availability and advance reservation.
